Repair point at Saefkow-Platz – volunteers help with repairs

Toaster broken? Hairdryer broken? Cell phone on its last legs? There's now a repair shop at Anton-Saefkow-Platz in Lichtenberg where tenants in the neighborhood can get help with repairs. "The idea came from a tenant himself," explains Sylvia Herbst-Ilius, chairwoman of the HOWOGE Fennpfuhlpark tenants' advisory board. With the support of HOWOGE and the Berlin Lichtenberg district office, the tenants' advisory board took up the tenants' initiative and established a repair shop in its offices at Franz-Jacob-Straße 22. Help for self-help

Unlike a traditional repair service, the Repair Point offers the opportunity to breathe new life into small, broken appliances with professional support: "We offer our assistance with repairs," emphasizes Herbst-Ilius. This means that anyone who brings in a broken appliance will be instructed on how to repair it themselves. "The volunteers inspect the appliances brought in and provide tips for use or even instructions for self-help," explains the tenant representative. Prior registration is not required. The important thing is that the appliances are actually small, i.e., not washing machines, microwaves, or televisions.
