If a fire breaks out in an apartment building, the correct behavior of the tenants can prevent it from spreading and bring people to safety. The fire department recommends the following:
1. Stay calm
A fire in one's immediate surroundings understandably causes alarm. However, calmness and control can be practiced by rehearsing the necessary steps beforehand. Knowing what to do allows for a better response.
2. Delete
Every fire starts small. If the cause of the fire is still visible and can be extinguished with an outstretched arm, you should react quickly.
Important:
- Do not extinguish burning fat in a pot or pan with water; instead, smother the fire – for example, with the pot lid.
- Fire extinguishing spray cans are easy to use and are very helpful for small incipient fires.
- A tipped-over candle can also be extinguished with a water sprayer – if it is quickly available.
- Tip: Typical fire extinguishers are somewhat more complicated – it's best to familiarize yourself with their use beforehand.
3. Close the doors
A simple door can stop the spread of flames and smoke for at least ten minutes. Therefore, for everyone's safety, doors leading to the source of the fire should always be closed.
4. Others warn
Other people in the apartment should be informed immediately and brought to safety – including neighbors in the building, if possible.
5. Check escape route
Warning: If smoke develops in the hallway or stairwell, avoid these areas immediately. It is best to stay in your apartment, seal doors with wet cloths, and make yourself visible by opening a window.
6. Telephone and keys
When leaving the apartment, take your keys and mobile phone with you to inform the fire department and to allow the helpers easy access to the apartment later.
7. Call the fire department
Once all residents are safe, the fire department should be alerted immediately. Call 112 and report the location of the fire, what happened, and who is calling.
