Midori on Stefan-Heym-Platz is a family-run restaurant serving regional and homemade food from Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan.
Vinh Quang Ngyuen actually studied economics. He never imagined he'd one day run a small business himself. For four months now, he's been the restaurant manager of Midori, an Asian restaurant located right on Stefan-Heym-Platz, next to the HOWOGE headquarters.
Favorite cuisine from three countries
The menu transports visitors primarily to Thailand, but also to Vietnam and Japan. Vinh describes his cuisine as "Asian Fusion Kitchen" and explains: "Our chef is Thai, and I myself am from Vietnam." Accordingly, the menu is diverse and features several specialties. "Our soups and salads are very good," enthuses Vinh. He particularly recommends Nüa Nam Tok – strips of beef with special Thai herbs, fresh mint, red onions, and coriander. His wife and daughter, on the other hand, love a dish called Bún Nem, Chả, Chả Viên. These are baked spring rolls with grilled pork and pork balls with homemade sauce. Vinh says that 99 percent of the menu is homemade. This includes the Vietnamese coffee and iced coffee. Completely sugar-free, but with sweetened condensed milk and very strong.
A place in the sun for many
The special combination of classic regional and national Asian cuisines, as well as a large indoor and outdoor area, make the restaurant an ideal location for corporate or family celebrations. At lunch or dinner, the food is delicious outside on Stefan-Heym-Platz, where the fountain trickles and children can play, or in the stylish interior. Vinh designed it specifically with an architect to ensure his guests feel completely at home. And how did the name Midori come about? "It means 'green' and is a Japanese word," reveals the 56-year-old. He likes the word and what it stands for: a positive, familiar color. But it can also stand for 'freshness' or 'pure atmospheres,' which certainly applies to Midori.
