The first section of the innovative residential complex’s construction was created by a Berlin investor out of real shipping containers on an approx. 11,000-sq-m site and run purely as a student residential complex (“EBA51”).
On 1 January 2017, HOWOGE took over this unique complex and also purchased the second construction section, which will be ready for occupancy upon completion, from a project developer.
To accentuate the internationality of the residents, who come to Berlin from all different countries to work or study, the three wings will be called “Frankie, Johnny & Nelly”. “Nelly” and part of “Johnny” are already complete.
All apartments are furnished, and are leased out at a flat rate incl. additional costs, electricity and wireless Internet access. There are 86 single apartments, each approx. 26 sq m, and 23 double apartments, spanning around 52 sq m, which are made out of prefabricated modules and “40-foot-high cubic shipping containers” with external dimensions of 12.19 m x 2.45 m x 2.90 m, and which have been modularly combined into two four-storey buildings.
Another 244 single, 12 double and 8 mini-double apartments (approx. 30.5 sq m) are being built in container size, but with classic modular structure, between February 2017 and March 2018. The three wings are accessed through external staircases at the front, terraces and arcades which are interconnected by bridging elements. This creates an interesting interplay between the architecture and surrounds. The apartment, balcony and public thoroughfares transition into one another, encouraging communication between residents.
Eichbuschallee 51, 53 and 55 are the addresses of the young people – such as students and apprentices – living here in the heart of Berlin-Plänterwald, in the Treptow-Köpenick district. The residential area offers local recreation facilities and proximity to the city centre, including two supermarkets and a bakery right next-door. It is just 2 stops on the S-Bahn (suburban railway) to the Ostkreuz transport hub. Hip pubs and clubs in Kreuzberg and Neukölln, along with cinemas and leisure complexes, are easily reached by bike.
